Dotterels nest along our New Zealand beaches. Their nests are generally just a scrape in the sand, on or around the dunes, which makes them very vulnerable to humans and their pets, especially in built up areas. This is the inspiration behind the story of Little Dot and the strange green orb, written in rhythmic rhyme for reading to the very young through to early school years and learning to read.
